You'll need to perform this upgrades steps:
Moodle 5.3 is a Long-Term Support release: the version you are meant to standardise on, with a longer support window than the six-month standard cycle. Everything that shipped in 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 is included, so a single upgrade from 4.5 gives you multi-marker grading, the modernised Question Bank, the new AI providers and the React and Composer foundations, all supported together. Upgrade once, stay supported for years.
This is not a vague warning: general bug fixes for Moodle 5.0 and 5.1 end on 5 and 6 October 2026. If your site is still on an older branch, you are running code that no longer receives fixes, which is a real security and compliance exposure. Upgrading now closes those gaps, protects your user data, and keeps you inside a maintained support window. Peace of mind comes with a supported version.
Moodle 5.3 adds linear course navigation with Previous and Next controls, marking workflows for multi-marker grading at scale, a refreshed look and feel under the Moodle Design System, and forum upgrades that make discussions easier to move through. It is the release that turns the last three versions' work into a stable, supported platform.
One change catches people out: Moodle 5.3 removes the Classic theme from core, leaving Boost as the only bundled theme. Sites on Classic, or on a custom theme built from it, must install Classic as an external plugin or migrate to Boost. We audit your theme, plugins and overrides as part of the upgrade, so nothing breaks in production and your users see a stable, modern platform.
