A Zed skill and CLI that let you pick which AI model handles each subagent type, delegating coding, browser testing and exploration to the right model.
Use-Subagent is a Zed skill that manages which AI model each subagent type uses. Modern editors let an agent delegate work to subagents, but they do not always let you decide which model does that work. This skill adds the middle layer: a small zsetagent CLI to assign a model per subagent type, plus per-type instruction files.
The goal is simple: a lightweight model for exploration, a strong one for coding, another for browser testing. You decide the routing once, and the agent delegates accordingly.
The recommended path is the quick-install link in the repository, or clone the full repository into your Zed skills folder:
git clone https://github.com/tuchsoft/zed-use-subagent-skill.git ~/.agents/skills/use-subagentWindows is not supported: the skill relies on Unix paths and symlinks.
zsetagent --list # show available subagent types
zsetagent <type> # set the model for a type
zsetagent --skill # regenerate this SKILL.md
zsetagent --skill --force # overwrite an existing skillEach subagent type gets a Markdown file in the config/ folder (for example coding.md, browser_testing.md, exploring.md) describing what the type is good at, when to use it, what to include when delegating, and the snippet to copy into every delegation prompt.
This repository is explicitly labelled a temporary workaround, to be deprecated when and if native subagent management arrives in Zed. It is published because it fills a real gap today, not because it is meant to live forever.
